The Ryan PT-22 has two seats in tandem and a simple monocoque fuselage clad in aluminium sheet.
The wings consist of spruce spars, aluminium ribs with steel compression members with the leading edge covered with aluminium sheet and the rest of the wing covered in fabric.
The fuel tank is mounted in front of the cockpit and fuel is gravity fed to the carburettor. The oil tank is situated on the front of the firewall and fed to lubricate the engine.
The wing flaps are operated mechanically by the pilot with a lever in the cockpit. The elevators are also adjusted manually by a wheel in the cockpit to adjust trim.
Each wheel has a hydraulic brake which can be controlled by the rudder pedals in each of the cockpits.

The Ryan PT-22 was produced from 1941, with 1,048 built.

The PT-22 was the first USAAC purpose built monoplane trainer.
The PT series was in heavy use throughout the war years with both military and civil schools, but with the end of the war, was retired from the USAAF.
